Car Rental Azores is an independent comparison service built specifically for travellers exploring the nine islands of the Azores archipelago. We are not a rental company and we do not own any cars. Instead, we compare live offers from more than twenty trusted local Azorean suppliers and international brands operating across Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Flores, Santa Maria, Graciosa and Corvo.
Our platform shows you real prices, real availability and honest supplier ratings side by side, so you can choose the deal that fits your trip. Once you select an offer, we connect you to the supplier's booking platform to complete your reservation directly with them. The rental contract is always between you and the supplier you choose.
The Azores is not a single destination. It is a scattered archipelago spread over 600 kilometres of Atlantic Ocean, where each island has its own character, road network and rental market. Renting a car on Sao Miguel does not give you wheels on Terceira. Cars cannot travel between islands on ferries or flights. This geography creates complexity for travellers who want to visit multiple islands, compare prices or simply find a reliable supplier on a smaller island like Flores or Sao Jorge.
We built this site to solve that problem. Instead of visiting a dozen supplier websites, guessing which companies serve which airport, or navigating Portuguese-only booking forms, you search once and see all available offers for your pickup location and dates. We cover every major airport (Ponta Delgada, Lajes, Horta, Pico, Flores, Santa Maria, Sao Jorge) and the main towns on every island.
Our comparison engine queries both local Azorean rental companies and international brands with a presence in the islands. Local companies often have the best prices and intimate knowledge of island roads, weather and driving conditions. International brands offer broader geographic networks and standardized terms. Both types appear in your search results with transparent pricing, visible insurance options and clear supplier ratings based on real customer feedback.
We show daily rates, mandatory charges (airport fees, additional driver costs, young driver surcharges where applicable), optional extras (GPS, child seats, additional insurance), and fuel policies. Most suppliers offer free cancellation up to 24 or 48 hours before pickup. The search results display these details so you can compare apples to apples.
When you search for a car on our site, our system queries live inventory from our partner suppliers in real time. You see current availability and pricing for your exact dates and pickup location. The results page ranks offers by price, but you can filter by car type (manual or automatic), supplier rating, insurance level or other preferences.
Clicking "View deal" or "Book now" takes you to the supplier's secure booking page, pre-filled with your search parameters. You complete the reservation there, providing your driver details, payment information and any extras you need. The supplier confirms your booking by email and provides pickup instructions, local contact numbers and the rental agreement. We do not handle payments, store your credit card details or issue rental vouchers. Our role ends when we connect you to the right offer.
Sao Miguel: Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL), Ponta Delgada city, Ribeira Grande, Furnas. Sao Miguel is the largest island and the main gateway to the Azores. Rental supply is excellent year-round, with dozens of cars available at the airport and in town. Compact manuals are the most common and affordable; automatic transmission cars and larger SUVs book out fast in summer.
Terceira: Lajes Airport (TER), Angra do Heroismo, Praia da Vitoria. Terceira is the second hub, home to a U.S. air base and UNESCO-listed Angra. Rental stock is strong, but automatic cars are fewer than on Sao Miguel. Book ahead for July and August or for specific vehicle types like minivans.
Faial (Horta): Horta Airport (HOR), Horta marina. Horta is the mid-Atlantic sailing crossroads, famous for Peter Cafe Sport and the Capelinhos volcano. Rental companies are small but reliable. Compact cars suit the island's short distances; pre-booking is wise in peak season.
Pico: Pico Airport (PIX), Madalena, Lajes do Pico. Pico is long, narrow and dominated by Mount Pico. A car is essential to explore the UNESCO vineyards and coastal villages. Supply is limited; reserve well in advance, especially for automatics.
Sao Jorge: Sao Jorge Airport (SJZ), Velas, Calheta. Sao Jorge is tiny, with steep cliffs and remote fajas accessible only by car. Rental stock is minimal. If the island is part of your itinerary, book your car as soon as you confirm your flight.
Flores: Flores Airport (FLW), Santa Cruz das Flores. Flores is the western frontier of Europe, wild and waterfall-draped. Rental supply is scarce. Book months ahead if visiting in summer; off-season availability improves but remains limited.
Santa Maria: Santa Maria Airport (SMA), Vila do Porto. Santa Maria is the warmest, driest island, with sandy beaches and a red desert landscape. Rental companies are few; pre-booking is essential year-round.
Graciosa and Corvo: These two smallest islands have minimal or no dedicated rental supply. If you need a car on Graciosa, contact local providers directly before arrival. Corvo is walkable and car-free.

We do not guarantee prices (they fluctuate with demand, season and availability), and we do not offer our own insurance or customer support line. We are a comparison tool, not a rental company or booking agent.
We do not sell your data, inject hidden fees or steer you toward higher commissions. The offers you see are ranked by price and customer rating, not by our commercial relationships. Our business model is simple: if you find the right car through our search and complete a booking with a supplier, that supplier may share a small referral fee with us. This does not affect your price. You pay the same rate whether you book through our link or go directly to the supplier's website.
Renting a car in the Azores is straightforward if you understand a few local rules:
The Azores drives on the right. Roads are well-maintained on the main islands (Sao Miguel, Terceira), but narrow and winding in villages and coastal areas. Expect steep hills, sharp curves, frequent roundabouts and occasional livestock on rural roads. Cows have right of way. Slow down in fog (common on mountain passes) and watch for sudden weather changes.
Compact cars are ideal for village streets and parking. Automatics are rare and expensive; if you need one, book weeks in advance. Four-wheel drive is unnecessary except perhaps on Pico's unpaved vineyard tracks. GPS or a phone with offline maps is essential; signage is decent but Portuguese place names can be confusing.
Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, 100-120 km/h on expressways (Sao Miguel has a short motorway). Seatbelts are mandatory. Do not use a phone while driving. Drink-drive limit is 0.05% BAC (0.02% for new drivers). Police checks are infrequent but penalties are steep.
Peak season (June to September) brings warm, dry weather, crowded trails and high rental prices. Compact cars on Sao Miguel start around EUR 28-35 per day; automatics and SUVs are significantly more. Book at least four weeks ahead for summer travel.
Shoulder and winter months (October to May) offer lower rates (from EUR 18-22 per day for a compact manual), green landscapes, fewer tourists and excellent conditions for hiking, hot springs and whale watching. The weather is mild (14-18 degrees Celsius) but wet and windy. This is the best value period, and our comparison engine will show you the price difference clearly.
